- G&M Family Farm
G&M Family Farm is located in Freshwater, Newfoundland and Labrador. They offer a plethora of services, from hive products and supplies to beekeeping courses. Their mission is to inspire fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to try doing things a little differently than the norm – specifically by prioritizing the environment first in their daily lives.
With the support of funding from MMSB’s Solid Waste Management Innovation Fund (SWMIF), G&M Family Farm has collaborated with Dr. Adrian Unc & Dr. Amana Kedir of Memorial University of Newfoundland & Labrador, developing a recipe for engineered soil using organic waste from the farm and community. The project is paving the way for the creation and commercialization of engineered soils in the Atlantic and Northern regions of Canada.
In addition to their soil project, G&M Family Farm has been making a big impact on Newfoundland and Labrador’s honeybee population. Honeybees are instrumental to our provincial, national, and global food security. The farm has recently wrapped up a 3+ year project focused on the instrumental insemination of Queen Honeybees – extending our short coastal bee season and welcoming many more bees to our province in the process.
