- Compost Bin Distribution Program
Nearly 1/3 of all waste placed at the curb is organic material.
Promoting organic waste composting not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but enriches soil quality and conserves valuable landfill space – all while saving communities money.

We’re proud to say that there has been a growing interest in community composting initiatives across the province – so, in recent years, MMSB’s Backyard Compost Bin Distribution Program (BYCDP) has evolved into the Compost Bin Distribution Program (CBDP), which now includes not only backyard compost bins but also larger scale community compost bins. Since 2005, over 36,000 compost bins have been distributed to households throughout the province.
How the Compost Bin Distribution Program Works
MMSB will issue an expression of interest to communities and community groups to assess their willingness to partner. If there is sufficient interest, MMSB will order compost bins and offer them to partner communities at a subsidized rate. Depending on the type of bin, participating communities have two options:
- Distributing and selling backyard bins to their residents
- Establishing a community compost site and outlining usage guidelines for residents
Bringing Community Composting to Life
Watch the video to see how the Town of Georges Brook – Milton launched a community composting program with the help of MMSB’s Compost Bin Distribution Program!
Nearly 25% of their waste was organic material, so they started a compost initiative to divert food waste from the landfill – right into their community garden!
Composting Education
Take our online interactive course, Composting Made Easy, to learn how to effectively make compost using a tumbler or bin in your backyard. Residents will receive a certificate within 5 business days upon successfully completing the course.
