Provincial Government Recognizes October as Circular Economy Month
Environment and Climate Change
October 1, 2024
This October, Newfoundland and Labrador joins communities across Canada in celebrating Circular Economy Month, a nationwide initiative aimed at educating and engaging residents about the importance of shifting toward a circular economy.
A circular economy focuses on using products and materials in more sustainable ways, like repairing, reusing, remanufacturing, and recycling, to make them last longer and reduce waste.
Circular Economy Month is supported by environmental organizations and governments across the country, including Newfoundland and Labrador through the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB). Throughout the month, MMSB will lead an online campaign offering practical resources and tips to help residents incorporate circular practices into their daily lives. Follow MMSB on Facebook and Instagram to learn more.
As part of Circular Economy Month, October 21-27, 2024, is Waste Reduction Week, which focuses on specific waste types like textiles, electronics, plastics, and organics. Waste Reduction Week complements the broader focus of Circular Economy Month by encouraging residents to adopt habits that help reduce waste going to landfills.
Thinking green during Circular Economy Month and throughout the year contributes to a more sustainable future and creates lasting environmental change for Newfoundland and Labrador.
Quote
“One of the ways we can build sustainable practices into our daily lives is through a conscious commitment to reuse materials around our home and work. This Circular Economy Month, let’s challenge ourselves to send less waste to the landfill. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to support the Multi-Materials Stewardship Board and their efforts to provide us with the knowledge and tools we need to reduce our environmental footprint.”
Honourable Lisa Dempster
Minister of Environment and Climate Change
“MMSB is excited to partner once again for Circular Economy Month and Waste Reduction Week in Canada. By motivating individuals, organizations, and businesses to rethink their waste management strategies and adopt circular economy practices, we can significantly decrease the amount of waste going to landfills in our province and foster a more sustainable and vibrant community for future generations.”
Derm Flynn
Chair, Multi-Materials Stewardship Board
